On the photo above, is the monument to Columbus, and in the photo below, the East side of the Plaza de Colón, on the Gardens of Discovery, we have the enormous monument for the Discovery of America.
This sculpture of 1977, the work of Joaquín Vaquero Turcios, consists of four large concrete blocks, with a total length of about 100 meters. The blocks are carved with figures, texts and key names in the history of the discovery of America. Each block is dedicated to one aspect of the discovery: The Prophecies, The Discovery and The Genesis.
On these blocks, you can read extracts from the books of Chilam Balam (Jaguar’s Mouth), interpreting the Mayan prophecy about the imminent arrival of the “conquistadors” that would come from the East.
